Essential tremors
« on: July 08, 2018, 09:15:13 PM »
Most of you have heard me complain that I missed an easy shot because of "my hand" which was shaking so badly at the time I couldn't control my weapon. My hand and arm shakes (both actually) because I've been diagnosed with "essential tremors". In our local paper today there was an interesting article about a guy who had them and was more or less cured by an operation to his brain. I've cut and pasted some excerpts from the article.......sorry if you get bored reading them, or if this post is to long.......no I'm not going to have brain surgery - I'm hoping a new medication arriving soon will help along with the one I'm taking. Some days are better than others......wiping my butt has become a whole new challenge I tell ya! Apparently my cut and paste info was to large for the system, so I'll try it in three installments....

Well, the three small articles I wanted to post here are all larger than what the site would accept. So I'll try to briefly explain:  Essential tremors is inherited. It's a genetic disorder that affects the brain and causes symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease, but different.  It starts in the hands and arms, and sometimes affects speech and the muscles in the neck. I don't have problems with the latter two. My hands and arms don't shake all the time - I'm able to type and write and feed myself, although soup is sometimes a problem. I hold both my cup and my glass with both hands at times to keep from spilling stuff. The article I read pertained to a guy who had brain surgery - he was a machinist, and his symptoms have all but gone away. He's no longer taking his medication and has gone back to work full time. He's 67.  His operation was provided by the VA - I'm a vet, but no one's mentioned surgery to me yet. Not sure I'd be interested. I have a second medication that's coming, and hopefully taken with the first one, it will improve my shaking quite a bit. If that happens look out COD4! I can answer questions and  I'm not ashamed to talk about it, now that I've learned what it is and not something I did to cause it. It is non-life threatening (except in COD4) but it IS extremely frustrating at times. You are all my friends and I appreciate your support.

I hope that the new medication works.  Brain surgery is really scary, but if the medication doesn't work, I would at least talk to the doctors.

Thanks Murdock - and everyone who've read my posts. If the VA did do surgery, it would be my tax dollars at work!  That be the case, I'd get what I paid for in a sense.......
